Have you been reading a few of these articles but have no idea what some of the terms mean? Here's a quick guide to what some of the words mean.
- Brick: not drawing good cards or the cards you need
- Cut: Where you place some cards from the bottom of your opponents deck onto the top of their deck after they have shuffled. This is to avoid cheating
- Deck out: Have no cards left in your deck
- Donk: Knock out your opponents only pokemon on the first (or second) turn to win the game
- Draw: Taking a card from the top of your deck and putting it into your hand
- Game: 1 game of pokemon
- Hand: The cards you are holding. These can be used during your turn.
- Intentional draw (ID): Where 2 players agree to draw a game instead of having a winner. This IS legal in pokemon, but is not legal in other games, so make sure you check if it's legal before you start a tournament.
- Judge: A person at an event who is tasked with giving rulings to people who ask for them. This person shouldn't be playing in the tournament.
- Match: a number of games of pokemon (usually 3) where the person who wins the most games wins
- Meta: this just describes the "meta game", which is basically what types of decks are being played in your area. Basically, if a lot of water decks (for example) are being played, it's a water meta and you should play a deck good against water.
- Mulligan: Draw no basic cards in your opening hand, so you must re-shuffle your hand into your deck and try again
- OHKO (one hit knock out): Knock out the opponents pokemon in one hit when they were on full health
- One-shot: same as OHKO
- Pull: To pull a card means to get it in a booster pack or product e.g. "I pulled an EX from my booster!"
- Run: To run a card means to play it in your deck
- Scoop: Admitting defeat to an opponent and saying they won the game, even if it's not completed. This is sometimes used in timed matches to get to the next game so they don't run out of time.
- Stacking: this is illegal to do in any card game. This is where someone intentionally manipulates their deck in order to draw the cards they want, without using any card effect to do so. A form of dishonesty and can get you banned from most games.
- Tournament organiser (TO): Person running the event. They are in charge of making sure the event runs to time, prizes are given out and the results are reported.
- 7-prize game: This is an idea that a lot of players use when creating a deck. The idea is that if you can your opponent to knock out one thing that isn't an EX if you have to sacrifice something, then they will still have to knock out 3 EXs to win the game, essentially making them take 7 prizes and meaning they have to do more damage and may give you a few more turns to get out of a mess.
