Breakpoint Theme Deck Product Review

Today I will be taking  look at the breakpoint theme decks and what's good and not-so-good about them, so you can know if they are the right product for you.

There are 2 different decks to choose from: Electric Eye and Wave Slasher. As with all theme decks, these are both based around 2 different types of pokemon. Electric eye focuses on electric and psychic pokemon, while wave slasher is based around water and grass. The point of having 2 different types in each of these decks is so you can use the type that your opponent is weak to, or avoid using a type that your opponents deck is good against.

Theme decks are generally aimed at the more casual players. If you play at home or at school, these are a good choice of product, as they contain a lot of cards of the same type, so you can make a coherent deck. However they generally do not contain the most powerful cards.

What's good about the decks?

They're pre-constructed, so they're all ready to go. You can start playing these right out of the box, which makes them ideal for new players or players who want to easily change what deck they're playing. They also contain all the cards you need, including trainers, supporters, pokemon and energies.

These decks also come with an outline of the rules and some damage counters, so they really do contain everything you need to get into the game. They're also much cheaper than buying booster packs. You get 60 cards in a deck for $20ish, where if you spent $20 on booster packs, you'd only get 30 cards. So this is a great way to bulk up your collection.

So what are the big weaknesses of the decks?

Like all theme decks, these decks also suffer from a lack of trainer and supporter cards. I would recommend creating your deck around something like this:

  • 15 Pokemon cards
  • 12 Supporter cards
  • 20 Trainer cards
  • 13 Energy cards

Obviously this is a rough guide and will change depending on what your deck does, but it's a good starting point. These theme decks contain a few too many pokemon and energies, and not enough supporters and trainers. To make these decks a little more viable, I would recommend getting a pack or two of the 20 trainer / supporter cards we sell, take out a few of the energies and pokemon in the deck and add in some of your favourite trainers.

You could also try getting a pack of the 100 random cards + 10 rare that we sell, as there are bound to be powerful cards in there that you can swap into your deck.

Who would like these decks?

For anyone getting into the game, these are a great way to start. It's cheap and easy and you get a full deck.

They're also great for people who want to bulk out their collection at a low price.

That doesn't sound like me, what should I get instead?

This really depends on where you are in your playing career. If you're looking to start off but play something more competitive, try the deck bases we sell and get some lots of trainer cards to finish off the deck. The deck bases are the basic cards you need to make some of the more competitive decks.

If you already play, the deck bases can still be really good as an easy way to change your deck, just put in some trainers, supporters and energies that you already have and you're good to go! Otherwise, try booster packs. This way you have the chance to get some more powerful cards than what are in theme decks.

Remember there are all sorts of theme decks available, you can check out our whole range here. Just find a type you like and get playing! Let us know what you think of them in the comments section.
