Many people haven't heard of the Mewtwo and Darkrai deck, so I'll give a run-down of what it is and what's great about it.
What is it?
The product includes:
- Two decks
- Two themed deck boxes
- Two coins
- A 2-player playmat, a rulebook
- A Quick Guide
- Damage counters
- A code card to unlock the decks in the online game
A few people have noticed the higher price of the deck when compared to theme decks and trainer kits, this is because it's designed to be a much more competitive deck and even has an EX in each deck. There's also 2 decks in each set, instead of the 1 deck you usually get with a theme deck or trainer kit.
These have the 2 face-cards, Mewtwo EX and Darkrai EX and contain a lot of staple trainers, supporters and special energies such as:
- VS Seeker
- Shauna
- Professors Letter
- Professor Sycamore
- N
- Lysandre
- Skyla
- Muscle Band
- Double colourless energy
- Rainbow energy
All of these cards can be incredibly useful in any deck you decide to play after you have had enough of the pre-built decks. All cards listed above are also currently legal for use. So this product is like buying 2 decks at once, but much more competitive decks than theme decks.
What are the products limitations?
While most of the decent staples are tournament legal, the rest of the cards are only legal in the expanded format. This doesn't matter if you're an at-home player or if your local league plays with expanded, but Mewtwo EX and Darkrai EX wouldn't be legal for use in the bigger tournaments. If you're not sure what expanded is, don't worry, it's just a different format where different cards can be used.
It also has the problem that most theme decks do where it gives you a few too many energies. Each of the decks runs 15 energies, where most competitive players would run 12-13. This isn't a huge deal, but I would recommend trading out a couple of the energy for more trainers and supporters.
What's good about it?
It gives you a much more competitive deck than any other product does. You get 2 EXs that were very highly rated cards when they were in the standard format. Both EXs are very versatile, so will be able to be used in any other deck you may want. Mewtwo EX is especially versatile, as it's best attack only needs 2 colourless energy, so you can run it in any deck.
There's many more trainers and supporters than a standard theme deck, which means you'll have much more consistent games. You'll find that drawing your good cards is much easier in these decks than theme decks.
Since there's 2 full decks, this product also gives you plenty of options. You can split the pack with a friend or even just combine the best cards from the two to make a much better deck.
If you're looking for other options for competitive decks, you could try the Vespiquen deck base we have available, with nationals coming up in a couple of weeks, now is the perfect time to start practicing!
