Time for another fun deck Friday! So this is where I introduce you to a deck that I think is a bundle of fun. It's not going to be the most competitive deck, but it will be one that I think is a huge amount of fun to play, because we don't always play to be competitive, right?!
Todays fun deck friday is Dragon Mega Rayquaza. Yes, the one that does 300 damage. A quick disclaimer before we start: there are more competitive Mega Rayquaza decks out there, but this one is just way more fun because you get to do crazy amounts of damage if you set up. I think this deck is fun because your opponent can have a very intense strategy that requires a lot of thought and setting up and then BOOM, you hit them for 300 with your massive Rayquaza.
How does the deck work?
It's a fairly straight-forward deck. Get out Mega Rayquaza, hit for 300. Getting to this point is quite difficult though. You need to run a lot of energy acceleration cards. I'd advise running max elixir, mega turbo and double dragon energies. You have to keep in mind that you can only use max elixir before you mega evolve and you can only use mega turbo after you evolve. Since this is such an energy-hungry Pokemon, you're going to need to run both to try and power it up as fast as possible.
Why is the deck good?
- 300 damage! Need I say more?
- Weak against faries and there aren't too many that are played in top decks at the moment
- M Rayquaza has 230 health, making it very hard to knock out
- Double dragon energy helps you power up quickly, as does mega turbo
- You can (with a bit of luck) power up a mega in 1 turn! (Attach double dragon energy for 2 energies, then mega turbo the rest)
What's not great about the deck?
- It requires a huge amount of set up. Attaching 5 energies takes a long time, unless you can manage to get the combos off. The combos themselves require a lot of setup though
- You don't have many early-game attackers, meaning you're going to take a lot of hits early. To combat this you could run something like Wobbufet which you just stick out as your active in the early game to slow them down and just leave it to get knocked out.
- While the Mega Rayquaza does huge amounts of damage, discarding 2 energies per turn is a pretty heavy cost. You may want to power up a few of your Rayquaza EX and not mega evolve, so you can use an attack with a lower cost to knock out smaller things. I would suggest this Rayquaza EX for this deck, but you can run this one if you prefer it.
- Because it takes so long to power up, you'll have a pretty tough time against decks like Night March, but this is aimed to be a fun deck, it's not meant to win every match.
What other cards should I run?
- M Rayquaza spirit link: Don't waste a turn when you mega evolve, run these so your turn doesn't end once you mega evolve
- Professor Juniper: You're going to need to go through a lot of cards, so try running 4 Junipers to get to your cards in time
- Puzzle of time: Use these two at a time to get back your mega turbos and other cards you need.
- Super rod or sacred ash: In order to set up quickly, you'll probably need to use a bunch of Junipers and other cards that discard in the first few turns. You'll need some way to get back the Pokemon you discarded.
I want this, how can I get it?
A lot of the cards come in Roaring Skies, so that would be the best start to get the cards. If you're running low on trainer cards for your decks, you could also take a look at the trainer bundles we have as they're great for getting a few extra cards to add to your deck.
So that's all there is to the deck! I hope you have a lot of fun with it and let us know what you think in the comments section below.
